The Link will facilitate a diverse range of high-density commercial, retail, entertainment, hospitality, residential and community-oriented uses that complement the existing activities in the area, while bringing in exciting new opportunities. Designed with cool places for summer and sheltered areas for winter, residents, visitors and workers will be able to enjoy the spaces within the project year-round.

The project incorporates transit-oriented development strategies that emphasise access to the Perth Central Train Station. These include:

  • Sinking the Fremantle rail line from Perth Station to Lake Street
  • Undergrounding and relocating the Wellington Street Bus Station
  • Creating several important pedestrian and vehicular connections between the city centre and Northbridge
  • Providing entry points to the train and bus stations in safe, activated locations with adequate signage
  • Undertaking street design that provides greater pedestrian amenity, reduces vehicle speeds and provides infrastructure for cyclists.

Land Use

The Link will feature mid-rise urban form up to nine storeys, with a structured arrangement of taller buildings around key links between spaces. These taller buildings will be between 16 and 25 storeys and will assist in ‘organising’ the area, creating gateways while still ensuring natural light and privacy are preserved at ground level.

Approximately one third (4.25 ha) of The Link will be dedicated to shared public space, suitable for everyday use, as well as a gathering place for large events. Landscaping throughout will include trees, gardens and water to provide a comfortable place to rest, meet friends and enjoy the city.
