It’s hard to imagine that Claisebrook Village was once industrial land containing the East Perth Gasworks, scrap yards, contaminated industrial sites, empty warehouses and railway yards.

Environmental rehabilitation of the Gasworks site was a major component of the redevelopment. Gasworks remediation included:

• Building demolition
• Relocation of valuable trees
• Extensive earthworks
• Site drainage and subsoil groundwater interception drains
• The construction of retaining walls, hard landscaping and planting

Environmental clean-up also improved stormwater and groundwater quality and transformed this riverside land into recreational parkland with natural bush gardens, walkways and public art. Proximity to the river was maximised through the creation of the Claisebrook Lake and the inlet at Claisebrook Cove.

At the time, it was the largest project of its type in Australia and EPRA won three UDIA (Urban Development Institute of Australia) awards for the project, 1996, 1997 and 1999, for environmental remediation.
